A National Energy Transition Strategy will be signed today in-keeping with government's aim to transition to 35 percent renewable energy penetration by 2020.
Saint Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) Managing Director Trevor Louisy and Minister for Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology Hon. Dr. James Fletcher will jointly express their commitment to providing reliable energy at a signing ceremony for National Energy Transition Strategy (NETS), today.
Saint Lucia aims to transition to the government’s goal of 35 percent renewable energy penetration by 2020. To preempt the many questions and challenges that will arise with regards to reliability, ownership of assets and costs to the consumer, the energy transition strategy will provide a roadmap that outlines how to meet Saint Lucia’s future electricity needs, and will be developed in joint collaboration with the Ministry of Sustainable Development and LUCELEC.
Providing affordable electricity is a priority for both government and LUCELEC; the energy transition strategy will assess how reliability can be maintained and improved for future use.
“LUCELEC and the Ministry of Sustainable Development are fully committed to an inclusive NETS process. This signing represents months of exceptional leadership from the Ministry of Sustainable Development, supported by technical expertise and cooperation from LUCELEC, and is a prime example of utility and government collaboration,” said Roy Torbert, Manager at Rocky Mountain Institute and Carbon War Room.
A team from the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) and Rocky Mountain Institute - Carbon War Room (RMI-CWR) will provide technical support during the NETS process through funding provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
CCI and RMI-CWR are neutral, objective, third-party non-profit organizations with no special interests or preferred vendors. The team works across the Caribbean to create an open, fair and competitive marketplace for renewables.
Public consultations facilitated by the ministry, LUCELEC, and CCI and RMI-CWR will take place over the next six months.
